The RV industry, thriving, is getting younger

By Rebecca Ungarino of CNBC

mhf-rv-buyer-getting-youngerWhen James and Stef Adinaro first looked into purchasing an RV in 2010, they were hesitant. At 42 and 39, they felt they were too young to purchase a recreational vehicle.

Five years and one RV later, the Adinaros are hoping to upgrade, having embraced the road-tripping “RV lifestyle.”

Originally, the couple, who lives in Salt Lake City, purchased a used mid-size 2003 Mercedes van for convenience while traveling to bicycling competitions. But now, the couple are considering buying a new Winnebago model, the Travato, which caters to the more physically fit RV owner—complete with a bicycle and kayak rack.

The Travato, which has a suggested retail price of $85,476, is an example of how the industry is hoping to cash in on a physically fit consumer.

“The big shift is occurring in how people RV. Nowadays, RVers are more active,” said Stef Adinaro, a personal trainer. RV parks have begun catering to this shift by offering more gyms, fitness classes, walking trails and bike rentals, she said.

Helping to fuel that trend is, in some cases, a consumer who is younger than the industry has seen in the past.

According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s most recent ownership report, the fastest-growing cohort of RV owners in 2013 was 35 to 44 years old, which is just slightly less than the industry’s largest cohort of owners, which are between 45 and 54 years old. The average American RV owner was 50 in the 1980s, and today that age is 48 and falling.

“You used to think of RVs and think of the cigar-smoking grandpa and the retired couple,” said Matt Rose, director of recreation vehicles at the Indiana Manufactured Housing Association-Recreation Vehicle Indiana Council, “but not anymore.”

And that could be good news for not only RV manufacturers, but also for RV parks.

“They spend more money on experience than on a material good,” said Rose, who coordinates retail shows in Indiana. He has seen that these younger RVs spend more money while traveling and take more frequent trips.

RV sales historically have tended to rise and fall with the economy and consumer confidence. Right now, they are on the upswing.

Shipments have grown steadily, reaching an eight-year high of 356,735 units shipped nationwide in 2014, according to the RVIA. Shipments showed an 11 percent gain year over year, and a 116 percent gain since the industry’s recession low of nearly 165,000 in 2009.

Be the life of the party at your RV campground this summer.

Most RVers are highly social creatures. We love meeting new people, seeing new places, and experiencing new adventures. Now that the summer travel season is upon us, here is one way you can bring the fun to your doorstep and be the life of the party while on the road, while you get your neighbors in on the fun.

Throw a progressive dinner.

MHF 2015 Tiffin for blog postIf you drive an RV like this beautiful 2015 Tiffin Allegro Bus 45LP (now reduced in price and available for viewing here: https://motorhomefinders.com/rvs/2015-tiffin-allegro-bus-45lp/ ) you have the perfect place to host one leg of a progressive dinner.   During a progressive dinner, each participant takes one of the courses, and guests go from RV to RV to sample everyone’s culinary genius.

You can theme a progressive dinner any way you’d like—whether it’s a Mexican fiesta or a Cajun throw down, progressive dinners are the perfect way to share the work and also the fun. For example, a romantic theme makes sense if your party is scheduled mid-February, as does a Cinco de Mayo theme around the fifth of May. Or you could ring in the New Year with your mobile party.

A theme that centers on a geographic location may simplify a few of the planning decisions. If you select Italy as your theme, the wine, food and decor all seem to fall into place. Plan on at least a three-hour evening, in order to allow for 45 minutes to an hour at each stop.

Here are suggestions for potential courses:

  • Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails
  • An appetizer course
  • A first course such as soup, salad or pasta
  • The main course including side dishes Cheese, fruit and nuts
  • Dessert

Here are a couple of dinner themes that can get the fun started:

Around the World.

Have each participant choose their favorite place and favorite recipes for their stop. The first stop could be appetizers from Italy—bread, bruschetta, cheese, and sparking wine. Then it’s on to China where you can be served fried rice, egg rolls and orange chicken, and wash it down with some Tsing Tao beer. Then it’s on to Switzerland for decadent molten chocolate lava cakes and a sifter of Grand Marnier.

Tour The Mediterranean

Start with a humus dip, a brick of feta and some kalamata olives, made even better with a nice shot of Ouzo. Then it’s on to your next stop for a chopped Greek salad and a Heineken (a favorite beer in Greece). Move on to another RV for Mousaka or Spanakopita, washed down with a glass of Assyrtiko, a popular Greek wine made from grapes grown on Santorini Island. Top it all of with Baklava and a shot of Metaxa, a cognac-like blend of brandy, spices and wine.

Use your imagination, and above all, have fun! Choose décor touches that match the theme and be open to trying some new taste sensations!

Get Ready For Summer RV Trips

From Motor Home Magazine

MHF checking engine

Now that the spring thaw is putting a bee in your bonnet to hit the open road, it’s time to prep your motor home for summertime travels. Keep the following items on your checklist before you set out on the first trip of the season.

7 Tips to Get Your RV Ready for Summer:

•    Begin by cleaning and inspecting it from top to bottom, noting any damage.
•    Check the maintenance book and records to determine what items were done prior to storage and what is due now.
•    Set tire pressures, check the fluid levels in the engine and genset, differential and transmission.
•    Charge the batteries, clean the terminals and check electrolyte levels.
•    Flush out the freshwater and holding tanks.
•    Check the air filter and replace if needed.
•    Remove any cobwebs or debris, and test the refrigerator and water heater (more on that later).

Water Heater
Have you changed the sacrificial anode in your coach’s water heater lately? Winter storage, when the tank is drained, is the best time to check it. Some RV water heaters, including Suburban-brand models, have an anode that is used up in an electrolytic process, which prevents damage to the tank. It should be inspected annually for deterioration.

Motor home owners often forget to drain and flush their water heaters.
•    Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the tank and allow any sediment to escape with the water. Some models also have an anode rod that is part of the drain plug.
•    Inspect the rod and replace it if it is more than 75 percent depleted. Refer to the water heater’s instruction manual for replacement details.
•    Reinstall the drain plug and refill the tank before lighting the burner.

Sanitize Your Freshwater Tanks
Freshwater tanks should be sanitized regularly, especially in hot weather. To freshen the water system, follow these steps:
•    Fill the water tank half full.
•    Add a solution of 1/4-cup household bleach and 1 gallon of water for every 15 gallons of tank capacity.
•    Open all the faucets until all air has been bled from the system and the water coming out has the odor of the bleach solution before shutting off the taps.
•    After three to five hours, drain the water system and refill it with fresh water
•    Run water through all faucets and then drain the system again.

Refrigerator: Are you having on-the-road refrigerator problems?
Don’t let your food spoil in warm temperatures. Check your refer to see that it is keeping perishable foods adequately cold. If you’re traveling and having problems with the refrigerator in your motor home, here’s an online source of diagnostic information for do-it-yourselfers. Try www.rvmobile.com. This site has a large section devoted to identifying refrigerator problems, including troubleshooting, technical info and help for finding parts for repairs.

Batteries
Summertime temperatures result in faster water use in batteries. Water-use depends on temperature and charging/discharging activity. The hotter it is, the more water is needed. Also, if batteries are heavily discharged, they will use more water during driving and charging cycles. Therefore, you need to check the electrolyte level regularly and top off with distilled water for longest service life.

Onboard Generator
Make sure you don’t overlook maintenance of your onboard generator when you take your motor home out of storage and ready it for the upcoming season. Gensets should have their oil and filter changed, fuel filter replaced, and air filter checked and serviced. Check the owner’s manual for any other procedures as well.

Keep It Cool
Radiator hoses and other coolant hoses should be replaced about every five years. Although they may look fine from the outside, many times they deteriorate inside first. They can then burst without warning and if the driver fails to notice the temperature gauge, severe engine damage may result. While you’re at it, replace the thermostat and all hose clamps, and flush the cooling system.

Avoid Overheating When Towing

Driving motor homes in extreme temperatures while climbing hills and towing a dinghy vehicle can cause overheating. Here’s a tip that may make you uncomfortable, but could just keep your engine’s coolant from boiling. If the engine temperature gets near the danger zone, shut off the dash air-conditioner, open the windows and turn on the heater (not defrost, which runs the air-conditioner compressor, too) as hot as it can go with high fan speed. This often reduces coolant temperatures by 10 to 15 degrees. Never drive with an overheated engine.

Fuel System
Here’s a tip to control bacterial growth in a diesel fuel tank: Bacteria require water and a warm temperature to thrive in a fuel tank. It is important to identify the source of water and eliminate the source, or remove it through dehydration by using additives. Owners should consider adding BioBor or similar diesel-fuel additives, which are available at truck stops and auto-parts stores.

Can you deduct your RV costs if you’re using it for business?

MHF Island Travels bus wrapIt’s tax time, yet again. Accountants across the country are probably getting asked a similar question, “can I deduct any RV expenses if I use it for business.” While the answer might be “yes,” be aware that you’re venturing into a delicate area of the tax law having to deal with entertainment facilities.

An entertainment facility is any property you own, rent or use for entertainment. Internal Revenue Service examples of an entertainment facility include a yacht, airplane and, although not specifically enumerated, it would also probably include a recreational vehicle. Generally, you cannot deduct any costs relating to the use of an entertainment facility, such as depreciation, maintenance and insurance. While it’s true that a corporate jet can be considered a legitimate expense, it’s because the expense is considered ordinary and necessary in a particular line of business.

Your line of business would be key in determining the legitimacy of the deduction just as it would be for a corporate jet. For example, if you’re a physician or veterinarian and you use the RV as an office to meet with rural patients, then you can probably claim the full amount of the RV as a business deduction. If you could travel around to your clients without the need of a motor home and you have another office available to you, then the deduction is probably not an ordinary and necessary part of your business.

If the RV deduction is considered ordinary and necessary, then the interest would be a business deduction and not a second-home mortgage interest deduction. If the motor home is not a business deduction, you could still claim the interest as second-home mortgage interest. We suggest you get advice from your accountant on how you can reasonably justify the expense of the motor home in your line of business.
