Go Green in Your RV

Did you know RV vacations are more environmentally friendly than fly/drive/hotel vacations? PKF Consulting, an internationally recognized consulting firm with expertise in travel and tourism, found that families of four taking RV vacations generate less carbon dioxide than families traveling on a plane, renting a car and staying in a hotel.

Advancements in RV Manufacturing

Check out the new ideas and technologies being employed by the RV industry to create a growing market of products that are more environmentally friendly.

Lighter: Aluminum, fiberglass, renewable bamboo and other eco-friendly space age composites are used to build lighter RVs, making a difference in fuel efficiency and tow weights.

Smaller: While there will always be owners looking for the large models, manufacturers’ creative floor plan designs efficiently work many desirable on-board amenities into smaller footprints without feeling cramped.

Efficient: The lighter building materials coupled with more fuel-efficient chassis production means compact RVs rival the MPGs of some large SUVs and pickups.

Aerodynamic: Manufacturers are designing stylish, sleek front-ends to address wind resistance.

Eco-Friendly: RV manufacturers are making increased use of green textiles, renewable woods, power-saving LED light fixtures and eco-friendly sealants and components. And not only are the RVs earth-friendlier, but manufacturers are employing green practices in the manufacturing process.

Green RVers

RVers have always had a love of the outdoors. Almost 20% of RVers say they use solar panels to power some of their on-board systems. You can help preserve the great outdoors for future generations by following these conservation tips.

  • Keep RV and tow vehicle engines well-tuned to conserve energy and reduce emissions.
  • Always use marked RV campsites so as not to damage natural habitats.
  • Recycle as you travel at the campgrounds or through community programs. Take note of local recycling categories; they may be different from those followed at home.
  • Minimize the use of disposable dishes, cups and utensils. As convenient as they seem, they create an abundance of trash.
  • Keep campfires small to minimize the amount of ash and pollution. Don’t put anything into the fire pit that will not burn.
  • Observe fire rules, which may change daily with weather conditions.
  • Use nontoxic cleaning supplies and tank additives.
  • Where pets are permitted, keep them indoors or use a screw-in stake. Tying them to trees can damage fragile bark.
  • Work with nature. In hot weather, use natural shade, awnings and canvas covers instead of the AC. In cold weather, park where the RV will be protected from north and west winds and warmed by sun exposure.
  • A recent survey showed that more than two-thirds of RVers minimize water use on trips, almost half recycle more on RV vacations than on other types and nearly half turn off home utilities before they hit the road.
  • In addition, 94% of all RVers travel with 2-7 people, meaning the vehicles get more people miles per gallon.

Home for the Holidays

mhf-home-for-the-holidays“Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays…”

As Perry Como sang, there’s no better feeling than being home for the holidays.

What is home? Is it a place? For many people this season, home is a spot on the map, a destination at the end of miles of highway. People travel hundreds of miles to get home for the season.

Home is more than that, though, isn’t it? It’s a feeling. It warms us in our core when we gather with those we love the most.

While miles may separate us, the bonds we share remain strong, and we are able to pick up right where we left off when we see each other again.

Home is the place we belong. A place to call our own.

That’s why people love their RVs so much. Owning an RV allows us to take the feeling of home with us on the road. No hotel room can replicate that feeling.

If you’re looking to get into the RV lifestyle, know this: it will feel like home to you, and that feeling is priceless. No matter how many miles away you are from home—that is, your house—you will feel like you’re right where you belong. And that means every trip, every adventure, is absolutely worth taking.

You can’t beat home sweet home. Happy Holidays to all of our beloved customers.

Top Christmas Season Destinations

mhf-top-christmas-destinationsWhile there’s no place like home for the holidays, there is plenty of time around the holidays to put some miles on your RV this winter. And what better way to get into the spirit of the season than by visiting one of these destinations known for their Christmas light spectaculars?

San Antonio & Austin, TX
Texas may not be at the top of anyone’s mind when they think “Christmas destination” (unless you ask a Texan!), but two of the biggest cities in the state boast some impressive holiday festivals. The bridges of San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk are lit up for the season, along with over 200 trees and even the riverbed! As you gaze at the light display, barges bearing carolers sail by to get you into the holiday spirit. Over in Austin, the Trail of Lights winds through over a mile of Zilker Park, and the food offered by this famous foodie town can’t disappoint.

Charleston, SC
If there exists a bad time of year to visit Charleston, it certainly isn’t Christmas time. The antebellum city’s renowned Holiday Festival of Lights not only features beautiful lighting, but shopping, a holiday train, a Victorian carousel, and a sculpture made of 50 tons of sand. This beautiful southern town only gets more lovely as it celebrates the holiday, and is sure to give you the Christmas spirit.

Denver, CO
Colorado is already a popular winter destination, but if you’re looking for Christmas displays, the Mile-High City is a can’t-miss! The Denver Botanic Gardens hosts Blossoms of Light, a breathtakingly beautiful walk through an already lovely garden made more stunning by nearly a million holiday lights, as well as glistening ice sculptors and a choir that strolls the park.

Branson, MO
We’d like to recommend this Ozark Mountain town and its Olde Time Christmas celebration. This absolutely massive display features over 4 million lights and over 1000 decorated trees and is hosted at Branson’s own Old West theme park, Silver Dollar City. But this western wonderland isn’t the only Christmas entertainment Branson has to offer. There are also two drive-through light shows, one of which features a 230-ft.-high vantage point.

McAdenville, NC
This town with a population of less than 1,000 transforms into a true winter wonderland each year. The entire town square is decked out with fir trees of all shapes and sizes, all wrapped in a half-million lights. Carols are broadcast from the town church steeple. We dare you to visit and not feel the Christmas spirit.

So while the number one destination of all this December is bound to be wherever you call home, if you’re in the mood for some winter adventure with your RV, small towns and big cities all over the country have plenty to offer!

The RV industry, thriving, is getting younger

By Rebecca Ungarino of CNBC

mhf-rv-buyer-getting-youngerWhen James and Stef Adinaro first looked into purchasing an RV in 2010, they were hesitant. At 42 and 39, they felt they were too young to purchase a recreational vehicle.

Five years and one RV later, the Adinaros are hoping to upgrade, having embraced the road-tripping “RV lifestyle.”

Originally, the couple, who lives in Salt Lake City, purchased a used mid-size 2003 Mercedes van for convenience while traveling to bicycling competitions. But now, the couple are considering buying a new Winnebago model, the Travato, which caters to the more physically fit RV owner—complete with a bicycle and kayak rack.

The Travato, which has a suggested retail price of $85,476, is an example of how the industry is hoping to cash in on a physically fit consumer.

“The big shift is occurring in how people RV. Nowadays, RVers are more active,” said Stef Adinaro, a personal trainer. RV parks have begun catering to this shift by offering more gyms, fitness classes, walking trails and bike rentals, she said.

Helping to fuel that trend is, in some cases, a consumer who is younger than the industry has seen in the past.

According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s most recent ownership report, the fastest-growing cohort of RV owners in 2013 was 35 to 44 years old, which is just slightly less than the industry’s largest cohort of owners, which are between 45 and 54 years old. The average American RV owner was 50 in the 1980s, and today that age is 48 and falling.

“You used to think of RVs and think of the cigar-smoking grandpa and the retired couple,” said Matt Rose, director of recreation vehicles at the Indiana Manufactured Housing Association-Recreation Vehicle Indiana Council, “but not anymore.”

And that could be good news for not only RV manufacturers, but also for RV parks.

“They spend more money on experience than on a material good,” said Rose, who coordinates retail shows in Indiana. He has seen that these younger RVs spend more money while traveling and take more frequent trips.

RV sales historically have tended to rise and fall with the economy and consumer confidence. Right now, they are on the upswing.

Shipments have grown steadily, reaching an eight-year high of 356,735 units shipped nationwide in 2014, according to the RVIA. Shipments showed an 11 percent gain year over year, and a 116 percent gain since the industry’s recession low of nearly 165,000 in 2009.

Motor Home 101: Smart Tips for Summer Trips

MHF globe and appleAll over the country, summer vacation is ending and school is back in session. If you’re an RV owner who’s not quite ready for vacation time to be over—hey, there’s always time to squeeze in another roadtrip!—here are a few textbook tips that will help you on the road. Call it Motor Home 101.

Introduction to RV Arithmetic

There are two very important numbers to know when it comes to your RV: the vehicle’s height, and its width. Knowing the height will help you avoid bridges and similar obstacles that have low clearance. Any sort of collision with these obstacles can have disastrous results. Don’t take the measurements in the owner’s guide for granted, either. The manufacturer’s measurement doesn’t factor in accessories. Instead, take your own tape measure and find the actual height of your motor home and jot it down, helping you to avoid thousands of dollars in potential damage from an accident.

Many states have guidelines and rules that dictate how wide a vehicle can be before it is not allowed on certain road systems. Knowing the width of your RV and being somewhat familiar with these guidelines when choosing a route can help you avoid driving on uncomfortably small roadways.

Principles of RV Electronics

When you find yourself parked for long periods of time, it can be easy to forget that your recreational vehicle is just that: a vehicle, one that depends on a battery to start. Take a few minutes each day to run your engine and recharge the battery to keep all of your electrical systems working properly.

Economics of Beating the Heat

It’s still summertime, and the weather at most of your roadtrip destinations will be hot, hot, hot. Don’t be afraid to ask for a shady spot when you check in at the campground. Keeping your vehicle out of direct sunlight will keep the interior cooler and help your A/C and fridge to function optimally.

Furthermore, cooking indoors can warm up the inside of your RV. Plan to cook outside instead, on a grill or with a crockpot. Enjoy the weather, talk to your neighbors, and allow the inside of your vehicle to remain wonderfully cool.

Not only will these tips help you stay cool, they will help you consume less electricity and save money.

These are just a few ways smart RV owners can ace the roadtrip experience. Get out there and find your own this summer!

Tips for getting the most out of the Dog Days of Summer while traveling in your RV from the experts at VetStreet.

MHF dog-caravanSummer is here, and chances are your vacation is already underway. If you’re wanting to take your dog along with you in your RV this year, you won’t be alone, according to Kevin Broom, director of media relations for the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association.

“According to our spring survey of RV owners (completed in April), 61 percent of RVers travel with pets.” Broom adds that survey data shows that about 90 percent tote their dogs, while 14 percent are accompanied by their cats.

Any time you’re traveling with pets, of course, there are safety concerns to consider. And while an RV might seem homelike, it’s still a vehicle and can pose threats to your pet both while it’s in motion and while it’s parked. Here are five tips to help keep your pet secure.

Buckle Up

It might seem normal to let your pet roam free in the RV while you’re driving; it’s not uncommon to dogs with their paws on the windowsill, looking out at the passing scenery. But it’s a bad idea. Just as you would restrain your pet in a car — at least we hope you would — he should be confined while the RV is in motion.

That means riding in a crate that is secured, so it can’t move around, or wearing a pet safety belt.

“We wear our seat belts, and our pets should be wearing theirs, too,” Amy Burkert, of GoPetFriendly.com, says. She with her husband and dogs, Ty and Buster, have traveled more than 70,000 miles in their motor home.

Place a crate in an area where it won’t get too hot and attach it to something that is permanently affixed, such as a table or bench. You can fasten a crate in place permanently with bolts and straps or hold it in place with seat belts or some other form of tie-down that provides stability but allows you to move them as needed.

Some safety devices allow the pet to move around in a limited area while still attached to two fixed points. A short tether with a swivel can also provide extra mobility, but keep in mind that you never want to give your pet too much freedom of movement in case you need to make a sudden stop.

And never let your pet ride alone in a fifth wheel or camper that you’re hauling. He needs to be in the same vehicle as you, safely confined in his crate or secured with a pet seat belt.

Keep It Cool

Many people like traveling in an RV, because it can provide a safe place to leave a pet when the humans are going to dinner, for a hike in a national park or any other place where pets can’t go along. But like any vehicle, an RV can heat up in the sun. You can leave the air conditioner running, but power failures are always a possibility.

Clever and safety-conscious RVers use remote temperature sensors to ensure that pets stay cool. The devices monitor the temperature inside the RV and can send an alert to your cell phone if it gets too hot or too cold — although they cannot be relied on in areas with spotty cell phone reception. Other devices can be set to turn the generator on or off when the RV reaches preset temperatures. Choose a temperature monitor with battery backup in case the power fails.

Proper ID

Burkert says another important safety issue is making sure pets don’t get lost while you’re traveling. It’s all too easy for a pet to dart out of an open RV door in a strange place and head for the hills.

Your dog needs multiple forms of identification. A collar and tag are the first line of defense. A tag is visible, and anyone can read it. Put your last name on it and two to three phone numbers where you can be reached, including your cell phone.

Collars and tags can be removed or lost, so a microchip is a great form of backup identification. Be sure you register the chip and keep your contact information updated with the registry.

To help prevent your pet from escaping the RV, always put a leash on him before you open any door. Use a pet gate or other barrier if you are parked and want to keep the door open while he’s inside. You’ll need an extra-tall one if you have an energetic dog.

Safe and Sound

Older pets may have mobility issues. Purchase a ramp you can place in the doorway to make it easier and safer for them to get in and out of the RV.

Happy travels!
