RV ownership is on the rise. According to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, 8.9 million households owned an RV in 2011, up from just eight percent, or 7.9 million, in 2005. This increase is significant because many RV owners are trying to figure out where to park their RVs.
Most deed-restricted neighborhoods don’t allow homeowners to park RVs in their driveways, even if it’s for a short-term visit. Driveway parking stalls require a minimum of 20 feet by 10 feet. When you consider that Class A Motorhomes are typically between 24 to 45 feet long, this can be a tight fit at best.
So what about when you’re on the road, visiting a relative, or on your way to you next adventure? Where can you stay in between RV parks and campgrounds? As many seasoned RV’ers know, you can turn to the big box retailers in just about any locale in the country and find ample parking for the night. WalMart, Home Depot and Lowe’s typically don’t mind if you pull in for the evening. Just be sure to go and ask at the customer service desk before settling in, and be sure to park as far away from the entrance as you can so you don’t impede shoppers.
A lot of RV’ers look for the Flying J truck stop sign as a safe place to take a break while traveling. Most Flying J’s have RV parking that is separate from the trucker’s parking area, and they offer good deals on using their dump stations if you purchase gas there. Many also have restaurants, lounges and convenience stores.
But perhaps the best choice is any U.S. interstate rest area. They are well lit, often have a security detail on patrol, and are free and open to all.
