Tips for getting ready to hit the road this snowbird season.

MHF snowbirdIf you look forward to traveling south for the winter, wait no longer. The time is finally here for snowbirds to hit the road and head for warmer climes. As you finish packing and finalize your plans, remember these tips for the best winter travel experience.

Before you leave, prepare your house to be unoccupied for a few months. Clean out your fridge and freezer, and unplug them, but be sure to leave them open so they don’t mold. Do the same for your dishwasher. Turn off your water and drain the pipes so that you don’t come back to a flooded house. Turn your heat down low to save on a heating bill. To save your neighbors from annoyance, disconnect your landline phone, if you have one.

To deter intruders, purchase timer lights for the yard that go on at dusk and shut off in the morning. It is also a good idea to install these on a few lights inside. Lock your windows and arrange for someone to clear your driveway of snow. Cancel your newspaper subscription, and lock your windows, as well as any gates. Robbers look for these to be neglected as a sign that no one is home.

Finally, make sure you have everything you need at your new home. Have your mail forwarded to your new address, and pay bills online if possible so that you don’t miss an important payment. Some utilities companies will allow you to take a vacation leave if you inquire in advance, which might save you some money. Make sure you know where the best doctors and hospitals are local to your vacation home. To prevent fraud detection from shutting down your credit cards, inform the bank that you will be traveling, or add a seasonal address. Finally, bring tax documents with you, just in case your stay extends into April.

All of these are useful tips to include on your pre-trip checklist, but don’t worry too much. Traveling south in your RV is tons of fun, and your winter is guaranteed to be a blast.

Fall RV trips that are scary good!

MHF ghostsWe are now in October, the spookiest time of the year. Time to put out the pumpkins and black cats, and perhaps even take a road trip! There are great haunted houses and ghost tours all over the U.S. that can turn your typical Halloween into one that will give you goosebumps.

You might take a trip to Galveston, Texas, where ghost enthusiast and history buff Dash Beardsley will lead you on a walking tour of the haunted Strand District. Explore the 19th century infirmary where Civil War soldiers still stalk the halls, the bank where the ghost of a police officer murdered in a robbery still stands guard, and the railroad museum, frequented by a headless apparition. Photography is allowed and even encouraged—Beardsley claims that some of his guests have captured ghostly phenomena on film.

Another acclaimed ghost tour is the French Quarter Phantoms tour in New Orleans, which has been featured several times in the national media. Explore haunted cemeteries, grisly murders of days gone by, and voodoo curses, with humorous guides to lighten the mood. Tour groups are much smaller than average, ensuring you get a great view at every site and photo ops a-plenty. As if you needed an excuse to visit New Orleans.
